The jury of the famous Spanish literary prize “Premio Planeta” has awarded Paloma Sánchez-Garnica with “Victoria”, a Cold War love story; the 62-year-old author was already a finalist for this prize with her previous work, “Últimos días en Berlín”, in the 2021 edition. It was announced on Tuesday night, during a gala dinner in the Oval Room of the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) in Barcelona.
Paloma Sánchez-Garnica talks about truth
The winner’s story follows Victoria, a Russian spy in the United States, who returns to Berlin to become a famous radio broadcaster. Through her journey, the novel explores themes of love and resilience, against the context of the division of the city and the construction of the Berlin Wall. After receiving the Premio Planeta, she explained that her ninth novel “shows the importance of journalism as a repository of one of the fundamental rights in civilized society, which is the right to truthful and contrasted information”.
An important edition of Premio Planeta
Presided by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, the event brought together also notable figures from the literary, cultural and political spheres. Among these figures, there were the president of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, and also the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun. Furthermore, the final prize also celebrated Beatriz Serrano, whose novel “Fuego en la garganta” was the finalist for this year’s Premio Planeta edition. Her work, which is a contemporary story, resonates with millennials, touching the digital age.

In conclusion, this edition of the Premio Planeta is particularly special as it marks the 75th anniversary of Grupo Planeta. “This is not an edition like the others,” said the King, with respect to his presence and in reference to the anniversary. José Creuheras, the president of Grupo Planeta, stated instead that their goal remains the same: “to discover new readers and promote literary creation.”
